First published Dec 14th 2022, 12:42 am.

This is a continuation from Our Platform Part 1 – Envisioning a Full-Stack Solution with the Capacity to Power Any Start-up, Prototype, MVP, or SME.

The roll-out of the platform is targeting 3 phases of functional milestones via an agile iterative product improvement focus.

Phase 1 – 2022 – 2023

Phase 1 commenced early 2022, building upon almost a decade of MEAN and AWS development in the data visualization space with a non-technical client-centric focus. It targets start-ups and small businesses with immediate technical and data requirements – including users, objects, enquiries, payments, data exploring, ingestion, dashboards, and logging.

The pre-seed and seed round is self-funded with an MVP available for internal testing 2023. Interested third party and partner invitations beginning April 2023, ready for end-user testing and feedback for further iterative improvement of the platform to perfect a product-market fit. This agile iterative approach will remain indefinitely.

Functional goals:

User authentication, registration, roles, permissions, API keys, access control levels (ACL) and teams

Create, Read, Update, Delete (CRUD) of data schemas, field types, models, collections/datasets, and objects

Real-time dashboards, dashboard templates, graphs, data explorer and data flow, meta-data, dashboard widgets and sections, operational information

Support for multiple databases of multiple types streamed into a single central system, ie. MongoDB, DocumentDB, MySQL, Elasticsearch

Automated data backups, data change and update history, and timed snapshots of defined datasets

Create, Read, Update, Delete (CRUD) of scripts controlling automated ingestion of data source to target, API calls, data syncing from third parties, and custom scripts accessible via CRON and API

Create, Read, Update, Delete (CRUD) of organisations, projects, teams, tasks, tickets as well as complete control over identifying and forming linked data relationships between any object type on the platform

Create, Read, Update, Delete (CRUD) of maps, locations, areas, groups, and multiple map linkage, map styles, custom maps (ie internal maps, exoplanets, floor plans) and dynamic editing on individual maps themselves

Live and historical feed of all full-stack logs: API, user actions, user details, data ingestion and updates, infrastructure

File storage and file access control

Infrastructure ingestion rate at 360,000 matured objects per hour, handling 1000 users concurrently, seamless upscaling with demand at 100% uptime

Phase 2 – 2023 – 2024

Phase 2 branches out into preparation for more business operational control and includes project management workflows, third party integration and multi-solution data synchronization, logistics and fleet monitoring, bookings and calendars, financial data and reports, alarms, and alerts.

A focus on development of phase 2 features to begin mid-2023 with expected release 2024. Alpha levels of phase 2 functionality exists and to be continually improved upon until ready for client release throughout 2023. During this stage, series A, angel investing, and partnerships are to be tentatively explored while continuing to iterate product based on first-wave client feedback.

TLDR: The Solution

The core of this platform consists of the following scalable components:

A private business-facing API used for internal controls and processes.

A public-facing API for user-centric applications and front ends.

A data structure standard, model/schema control and data ingestion system.

An administration dashboard focusing on data visualization, business intelligence & day-to-day operational control.

A data manipulation, automated workflow, and proprietary script engine.

A secure cloud-based supportive infrastructure with a focus on automated deployment and updates, security, disaster recovery and access control.

Third party integration for standard functionality including payments, communication, logging, data extraction and a shared repository of user, product, and service data.

An enterprise-grade database, data & file storage solution, with a base set for integration with enterprise data warehouses.

It is a platform that allows full user-centric customization of its data, objects, relationships, and user access. At its core, it acts as a service that enables the storage, access control and manipulation of large amounts of data, a dashboard management system for reporting, mapping, and graphing data, and an operational meta-system allowing full view and control of business activities and intelligence.

Intro

Every year more people come to me with an idea. I used to just be the ‘website guy’, but after more than two decades tinkering in IT and with code, I could build more than just websites.

I love the excitement and innovation around start-up culture; the highs of a successfully roll-out or contract, the dreaded anxiety and following rush you get when things come together and work. I love building something I’ve designed and planned from scratch using the methods and methodologies that work for me. For most of my life I enjoyed building for someone else’s idea; never having any intention to realise my own until I had gained the wisdom, personal growth and experience I felt could only come with age…

The Personal Problem

…but I’m not getting any younger.

Despite the growing few who can invest early, and despite seeing offers in the million’s multiple times in my life for companies I had co-founded or software I had prototyped, I never saw the prototypes and MVP’s I had built the foundations of realise their full potential. I watched stacks I had built on my own over years languish and sit unused, and it bothered me. I walked the first few steps of the start-up journey and, every single time and through no choice of my own, I did not get to enjoy and experience the entire journey. I could never grow professionally and scale alongside the software I was building no matter how desperately I wanted to. For a myriad of reasons, previous start-ups, or ideas I was involved in as the ‘tech guy’, just didn’t get where I wanted them to go – and the primary cause was not due to any failure of the tech itself.

Eventually, I got tired of it. I still wanted to build, but I no longer wanted to wait on someone else, put the growth of the software I was building, and by extension my personal and professional growth, in the hands of a single individual or business entity. Outside of the companies I was more than just a contractor to, I got very tired of chasing unpaid invoices in the thousands for software I had built that my clients were trying to commercialise and sell for millions.

The Professional Problem

To add to the salary and competitive arena, too often I was witnessing businesses throw huge amounts of money at projects, plans and ideas in return for effectively zero or a net negative. The product is never delivered, or if it is it’s behind schedule, a broken mess, over budget, and a far cry from the expectations and requirements of the end-user. I kept fighting an internal monologue battle: surely, I could deliver better than this competition, couldn’t I? The older I got the louder it proclaimed, and I had to be certain this wasn’t an over-abundance of pride or arrogance speaking.

These groups and companies were raking in millions, sometimes tens of millions, for contracts and software that I just knew I could design, deliver, and manage better. With more focus on and pride in my work than I ever saw coming from teams I often worked with or competed against. I needed time to be sure I was competent enough to provide more value than those around me. I had to grow until I started waking up knowing I could. I wanted to be certain that I was a choice worth making.

And I could work to make that choice even easier. I was that stereotype of a frazzled hermit working late past midnight on energy drinks coding away in the dark, with no social life. Instead of having to be believed that I could deliver the solutions and platforms that I said I could, I built them in advance, rolled them out, ran tests proving their saleability and usability, and pre-packaged them.

Instead of rocking up to our first meet-and-greet, discussing a potential design for a new prototype, making promises, and throwing potentials around, I worked hard so that I could arrive with a packaged solution already built, ready to provide value and solve problems on the spot. Right there and then. No promises needed to be made, no guarantees that I would, no draft designs, no doubt on if it could be done. It’s right here – you can use the platform right now, test your prototype right now, connect your front-end right now. Not in six months or twelves or whatever it might end up being.

I worked until I was at a spot that I can bring 90% of what you’re looking for already developed and we can already be halfway around the racetrack before I even walk out of the room if you choose to go with me. Being able to bring value instantly would help me be certain that I was the right choice. With a solution already built, ready to be plugged into by your mobile app, your front-end designs, ready to be iterated upon or have customized propriety functionality layered on top of it, ready to power anything.

I can’t speak for contracts worth hundreds of millions or billions, yet, but I’ve seen it plenty in millions and tens-of-millions. And after years of analysis, learning, experience, and getting past the thought that maybe I’m just being too judgemental when it comes to others and arrogant when it comes to myself – I realised I can provide better value. Businesses don’t necessarily want more software to maintain, more staff to hire and train to integrate more systems, they want the entire suite ready and an individual or team they can trust handling their technical back-end requirements with industry and enterprise skills and standards. I want to sit down and be confident saying: I’ve already got you covered, our platform is right here, right now, ready; now let’s get this show on the road.

In Solving My Own Problem, Could I Solve the Problems of Others?

Could I do anything about what was bothering me both professionally and personally as above, and in helping myself, help others?

All the individuals or companies that come to me have similar problems which plague start-ups, non-technical business-savvy individuals who want to build software or require a tech solution, or just individuals with an idea, some funding, and a desire to get the ball rolling.

All require a technical back end that is often universal in nature and requirements: data storage, file storage, scalability, security, accessibility, API, payments, transaction history, logs, products, customer communication, account services. The 90% of the underlying stack that is everywhere in some form or another, that powers companies and their daily operations. If I could build a package exceeding the expectations and requirements of that 90%, I could tick those boxes in our first meeting, and let companies focus on their custom 10%, with or without my involvement – whatever they were comfortable with.

What I Wanted to Deliver to You

So, after a good period of rest and study, I swapped the order of how things were done. I built new software, before anyone had come to me and asked me to. I drew upon my experiences and built a new platform, standard and collection of full stack services first, and can license it to start-ups, individuals, companies.

The platform is now the ‘core offering’ of my own new start-up company: a start-up for start-ups, the expected functionality already provided, a base standard already set. My team and I can in turn build modules on top of this core that can act as the propriety and intellectual property of individual companies. But the base already exists and is ready to power anything, cutting out the initial months, or potentially years, of sourcing, designing, hiring, and developing a supportive back-end solution.

In designing and building this package, I have made it easier for start-ups and SMEs to go to market and deploy MVPs and prototypes. I’ve done this by removing the costs, timeframes and friction required in establishing a supportive technical team, a backend that can handle payments, user registration and accounts, product and service data, and removing the need to hire and manage a team of engineers for initial development and deployment.

So that moving forward into 2023, whenever anyone comes to me with that next billion-dollar idea, a requirement for a unique API or service, a fresh prototype requiring an innovative and agile back end, I have a complete solution under my wing already. It’s deployed, and any front-end developer can connect and communicate with it to provide all core business services. I can join or support the company in terms of staff, development, custom integration, advanced proprietary internal software development, or purely as an advisor.

I no longer want companies coming to me and asking me to build a full stack solution for a prototype, seed, or pre-seed investment, and/or a minimal viable product. I want them to come to me because I already have an established full-stack back-end offering, and a desire to work with them as closely as they like to immediately implement it. I don’t want to say I can, or I will in an industry where you can’t even trust those words anymore. I want to be a solid, valuable, and trusted member of teams. I want to feel that rush and excitement of innovation and start-ups. I want to say I have. I want to empower companies and individuals to immediately focus on their front-facing user products, prototypes, and services, focus on their own proprietary code and innovations, and go to market cleaner and faster.

This product is a bespoke out-of-the-box solution that integrates with, not relies upon, all the standard and expected services while providing its own. It is a platform that effectively replaces the first 6-12 months of a start-ups back-end and API development stage or innovative new product or service. It can be customised to suit stage one of operations and prototyping in a day by anyone familiar with the GUI.

The Solution

At its core, it acts as a service that enables the storage, access control and manipulation of large amounts of data, a dashboard management system for reporting, mapping, and graphing data, an, and an operational meta-system allowing full view and control of business activities and intelligence.

Outro

I used to be hesitant that maybe I was too crazy or arrogant for thinking I can design and build my own system and platform and scaling up as requirements change. Purely because of an itch I can’t scratch that tells me I can build and provide better than so much of what I’ve seen so far in my 20 years of experience in start-ups in the one-to-twenty-five-million-dollar bracket. There’s plenty more still to do, a lot more. But rolling out this MVP to a first wave of clients for feedback is the first step – of many.

This list was first published in 2011, and has been updated yearly since.

HTML is easy to learn, understand, and master. Partnered with CSS, it is the building block of all web design and development today. If you are just starting out learning web languages, a HTML crash course is where you want to start. It’s best to first develop both your traditional HTML and CSS skills, then move on to building a working knowledge of what’s new with HTML5 and CSS3.

Everything Photoshop-related that a DIY learner might want to gain an understanding of is covered in this book. Read more..

This is another book aimed at intermediate to advanced users of Photoshop rather than beginners, primarily photographers instead of digital artists and graphic artists. The book introduces the reader to the ins-and-outs of Photoshop and building an understanding of the what, when, where and why of the many tools available. It goes into deep detail and discussion of Adobe Camera Raw processing and Brdige, ensuring that photographers that need an understanding of these linked programs will not be putting the book down empty-handed. It covers, as one reviewer puts it, detailed ‘particulars’, which include required computer specs for installation, program configuration tips, menu customization options and the knowledge of creating actions. If you’ve already gone through one of the beginner books on this list, this may be the second Photoshop book you want to add to your collection, especially if you are a digital photographer. Read more..

Looking for the best C++ books to get you up to speed or hone your skills?

This list was first published in 2011, and has been updated yearly since.

C++ is a powerful general purpose programming language that is statically typed, free-form, multi-paradigm and compiled. It is one of the most popular programming languages in the world and is implemented across a wide variety of hardware and operating system platforms. As an efficient compiler to native code, its application domains include systems software, application software, device drivers, embedded software, high-performance server and client applications, and entertainment software such as video games.

It doesn’t matter whether you’re a beginner new to programming or an intermediate-advanced user looking to master the language, there’s a book here that has got you covered. They are all extremely popular around the web, well-written, well-received and easy to follow for their relevant skill bracket.

C++ Primer

C++ Primer is a highly recommended, well organised and well-written book for those who want to learn C++. It is a very thorough introduction to the language in a very accessible format, with plenty of examples and explains everything in the language in great detail. It will help you learn C++ fast, especially if you come from a programming background already, and will teach you how to use the language in modern, highly effective ways. Chosen and recommended by many of industry leaders, it highlights best practices, the core of the language and its standard library, while providing great examples and insightful analysis along the way. It comes at over one-thousand pages but is not messy or hard to navigate, so expect to find any beginners topic covered extensively. Read more..

Accelerated C++: Practical Programming by Example

Accelerated C++ covers very similar ground to the previous book, but is nowhere near as large because it does not introduce someone to programming. It is a book written for those who already have a solid background and experience in programming in another language. It has denser and more compact material aimed at more advanced newcomers to C++, but if you don’t need a ‘newbified’ introduction to the language than this one will get you up to speed faster. Not for the faint of heart who may feel a little overwhelmed stepping into C++ for the first time. Read more..

C++ Templates covers the advanced and powerful features of C++ templates and shows software engineers how to use them to build and maintain cleaner, faster, and smarter software. Templates are among the most often neglected and misunderstood features of C++ and so a primer on them is very useful, but be warned you need an intermediate to advanced level of experience and skill already in C++ for this book. It acts as a tutorial to templates as well as a handy reference, with an emphasis on the practical use of templates and using them in real-world examples. Every detail of templates is covered: how they are implemented, common pitfalls, the One Definition Rule (ODR), overload resolution and solid appendices. Read more..

Looking for the best PHP books to get you up to speed or hone your skills?

This list was first published in 2011, and has been updated yearly since.

PHP is an open source server-side scripting language designed for web development to produce dynamic web pages. It is used extensively by web designers and developers due to its free, community-backed nature and prevalence throughout the web. Many web apps and CMS’ such as WordPress and Drupal are built from the ground up using PHP. For these reasons alone it is extremely popular, and PHP books line the shelves of nearly every web developer and designer.

If you are only looking for one or two PHP books, I definitely recommend one of the three 5-star listed ones here. They are popular, well-written, well-received and easy to follow for even those completely new to programming in general.

Beginning PHP 5.3

Topping this list is the extremely well received Beginning PHP. At 800 pages, this book is the best on the market for teaching PHP and programming concepts in general to beginners. Simple, straight-forward and concise, it is also an ideal resource for students learning the language. Topics and exercises cover advanced topics from PDO, expressions and image creation to object oriented programming (OOP). Exercises follow every chapter with solutions and explanations throughout and at the end of the book. Overall, a well thought out, extremely well- received book that successfully teaches a complicated subject to anyone ready to learn it. Read more..

PHP Solutions: Dynamic Web Design Made Easy

The second 5-star rated PHP book to hit this list is the highly recommended and popular PHP Solutions. Rather than reading like a linear tutorial, it follows a solution-oriented approach to getting things done with the language. The book begins by preparing the reader for installing and testing the PHP, MySQL database, and Apache server trinity on Windows or Mac. The majority of the book however is spent developing a PHP site from the ground up. There are plenty of supporting exercises and material throughout the book, as well as example downloadable files and folders. The overall approach and writing style of this book makes it a winner to those who have read it. Read more..

PHP and MySQL Web Development

The third and final 5 star PHP book to make the list, PHP and MySQL Web Development clearly describes the basics of the language, MySQL databases, web servers, and how the three communicate and interact with one another to create dynamic websites. It covers complex subject material in a clear and straight-forward manner and breaks down the more technical aspects of PHP so that it makes sense.
Murach’s PHP and MySQL

Another highly recommended book from the popular Murach series. Aimed at true beginners, it begins with a thorough introduction to the essentials of PHP and SQL. It does this smoothly and logically, making it easy for beginners to gain a sound grasp of the fundamentals and works from there. Many readers love the Murach series for its clear layout style and organization, with descripting text on the left page and samples, bullet points, and summaries on the right page.

Looking for the best Javascript books to get you up to speed or hone your skills?

This list was first published in 2011, and has been updated yearly since.

JavaScript is the world’s most popular programming language. It is the language for HTML and the web, for servers, PCs, laptops, tablets, smart phones, and more. With the advent of smartphones, applications and HTML5, JavaScript is becoming increasingly popular. It is a relatively easy language to understand and delve into, and this is why the best Javascript books line the shelves (and stay there) of serious web designers and developers, interface experts and web-application developers.

Looking for the best C# books to get you up to speed or hone your skills?

This list was first published in 2011, and has been updated yearly since.

C# (pronounced see sharp) is a multi-paradigm programming language encompassing strong typing, imperative, declarative, functional, procedural, generic, object-oriented (class-based), and component-oriented programming disciplines. C# is intended to be a simple, modern, general-purpose, object-oriented programming language. It is often used side-by-side with other web languages to develop powerful online and in-house web applications, and C# books are in high demand due to its growing popularity and strength across multiple fields.

If you are only looking for one or two C# books, especially if you are new to programming and want to master the C# language, I definitely recommend one of the introductory ones listed ones here. They are popular, well-written, well-received and easy to follow for even those completely new to programming in general.

Looking for the very best CSS books to get up to speed or hone your skills?

This list was first published in 2011, and has been updated yearly since.

I decided to run with the best CSS books of 2012 despite it only being the first quarter of the year for the simple fact that CSS3 is the new golden child. Whether you want to learn CSS first or step right into CSS3, the fundamentals of the language remain the same. This list will remain the last and definitive guide of the best classic CSS books since newly released books join the CSS3 ranks. See my list of best CSS3 books here.

CSS: The Missing Manual

Widely considered among the best CSS books, this one is definitely a must have for beginners and pros alike. Not only does the author really know what he is talking about, but his teaching style and writing is clear and easy to follow. At over 500 pages, the book is full of detailed examples, solid illustrations, and has tutorials at the end of each chapter to hone your skills and cement what you’ve learnt.

Browser issues, incompatibilities and the relevant hacks are detailed in full. The author also provides many online reference links for a more detailed explanation of important topics. If you only get one CSS book, make it this one: 80% of readers gave it 5 stars, with 15% giving it 4 stars. I still have it on my shelf, and reference it often. Read more..

CSS: The Definitive Guide

Another well-written and received CSS book which comes highly recommended. Eric Meyer has been revising this book with new editions for over ten years and is one of the leading authors on CSS. He has extensive practical experience and design knowledge, binding them together to cover topics and properties that have real cross-browser support and uses.

This book is not so well tailored to the true beginner as others, but if you have a little practical experience in CSS or are willing to put a bit of extra work in getting your head around the fundamentals, then you’ll still get a lot from this resource. Read more..

A third highly recommended book for getting started with CSS, with extremely high positive reviews and ratings by readers. It is very well-written and easy to follow, with easy explanations and a clear, logical layout. It does not go into unnecessary detail for readers wanting to learn and apply their new-found skills in the real world. For beginners to CSS, this book is a great, entertaining and easy read with practical examples, solid reference chapters and plenty of useful information. Read more..

Smashing CSS: Professional Techniques for Modern Layout

Another CSS book by Eric Meyer, Smashing CSS goes beyond the basics and assumes at least a general familiarity with the fundamentals of CSS. As such, it is not as idea; for beginners as my first two recommendations. Unlike many of his other books on the subject, Smashing CSS has a lighter, more humorous tone and purpose, making it more of a pleasure to read.

He begins by introducing the tools of the trade such as Firebug and SelectORacle, covers the finer points of layout and effects, and also introduces you to the future with HTML5 and CSS3 (slightly deviating from a pure CSS book). Very few in the industry can show you the ins and outs of CSS like Eric Meyer and Smashing CSS provides techniques that are thorough, utterly useful, and universally applicable in the real world. Read more..

The Zen of CSS Design: Visual Enlightenment for the Web

This is not a book that will introduce you to the fundamentals of CSS if you are just starting out. It is primarily aimed at people who want to improve the aesthetics and seamlessness of their website. However, because it was published in 2005, this book (and the Zen Garden site it often references) is a little dated and it’s techniques and examples for styling websites are not as relevant today. Much like a graphical portfolio, this book shows lovely examples of CSS for its time and inspired new themes and designs. Read more..

CSS Mastery: Advanced Web Standards Solutions

Another well-received all-rounder, CSS Mastery: Advanced Web Standards Solutions, Second Edition unites the disparate information on CSS-based design spread throughout the internet into one definitive, modern guide. Revised to cover CSS3, the book can be read from front to back, with each chapter building on the previous one.

This book is a great reference point for beginner to intermediate designers and is a great stepping stone into the more advanced world of CSS3 for those interested. It has a casual but intelligent writing style and all three authors provide valuable insight into beating those pesky browser-specific issues. Read more..
